Burning and booting of Batocera-5.11-xu4-20171119 image is just a massive fail

Alright guys,

Sorry i'm new to XU4's, I came from Pi3 which I had a massive laugh with and loads of success, I am not getting very far with the XU4. I have downloaded the above mentioned image from the official page via Google Chrome browser. Did everything by the book and it's not burning right at all, once i mount the burnt SD card to check files it's missing three or four files on root everytime. This obviously just black screens in the XU4, my issue is with burning the image, i've tried downloading it three times, zipping it, unzipping it, differencd SD cards, tried both Etcher and Win32disk applications, nothing works

Am i missing something here?

can you list the missing file and tell what you get ?

Just to check for the obvious (as I do not trust Windoze being able to properly show the files):
Did you flip the micro switch on the XU4 to make it boot from your microSD instead of the eMMC?
Then what happens when you put in the microSD and turn on power (assuming there's a monitor hooked up to the HDMI port 🙂 )?

Yes the switch was already on SD, but I flipped it both ways and left it back on SD.

All the XU4 did was black screen, had a little keyboard cursor in top left which never moved and obviously the blue light on the SBC itself was just doube blinking like it was idle, so frustrating

I may have to try this image again on the XU4 as I remember having a USB keyboard, USB dongle and wireless Xbox receiver plugged in on this attempt. Having the same problem like this on a Ubuntu 16.04 MATE build too. Never boots up with USB stuff plugged in wonder if Batocera is the same

Okay I just tried booting from a fresh flash of the image only this time I removed my eMMC flash memory from underneath the board, seems to work now.

Just need to find out the FTP details now so I can zap over some PSX and DC roms.

Is my eMMC memory faulty if it needs to be removed in order for Batocera to boot up?

As a person with multiple XU4s, and has an eMMC module, no, don't have any Linux Buildroot-based OS try to boot with both of them connected to an XU4 (both being an micro SD card and eMMC module attached underneath the XU4). It will glitch out every time.

So you are pretty much saying that you cannot have both an SD and a flash memory chip connected to the SBC at any time?

I can live with that I really can.

I have the Batocera OS fully working now, I do have problems though mainly with PSX emulation, I have THPS2 (Tony Hawks) in my roms folder, taken straight off my Pi3 which worked pretty well with no stuttering only to find it runs worse on this XU4.

Has anyone else had problems with massive lags or delays with PSX games before?

Think I will be getting rid of this XU4 if it dont start beating the Pi3, it's only reason I bought it for PSX and Dreamcast emulation

Also just tested Crash Bandicoot 2, Very laggy and is unplayable yet works perfect on my Pi3

Is there a way of adding the PCSX_Rearmed emulator to the Betocera OS?

I am not ruling out my XU4 being faulty yet as I bought it second hand.

Does anyone have any input to any of this to see if i'm the only one running lag on the PSX games?

if you have a emmc card, in 5.11 and before, you've to edit the file boot.ini at the root of the sdcard. (at the bottom)
the problem is fixed for 5.12 but not yet released.

Thanks for that, I no longer have an eMMC. Idiot me pryed it off the circuit board thinking it came off seperately only to realise I should not have done it.

I will buy another 32GB one in the future if needed.

Could you tell me if it's normal to be getting lags during PSX emulation please?

Try a different psx bios, and turn off rewind

The only core that doesn't work well on the XU4 regarding Batocera is the Sega Saturn one (and to be frank, it's not going to run well on ANY ARM board outside of a Tegra X3).

Check your setup, something's missing, as the others have alluded to.
