Volume hotkeys

Hi guys, I have a project where the speakers have no physical volume control, I need to control the volume via the Raspberry Pi 3.

I'm using a wireless keyboard, and I can adjust the volume in the menu, but I really need volume up/down and mute on/off to be triggered via key presses, is there any where I can set this? I could only find control pad setup.

it should work starting with 5.14. Can you confirm it please using the rc1 ?

Thanks for replying 🙂 I saw your sticked post and tried the new 5.14 image - unfortunately it's still not responding to volume up/down. Neither in the interface or the games.

I just want to say I'm super impressed so far. I've tried RetroPi, Lakka and Batocera, and yours is the only one that worked out of the box with both my display and easily changing the audio output. And the boot time is very impressive!

It's OK if this is not a priority for you, just making sure you know it's not actually working like you said.

Please note:
- My device is a bluetooth keyboard, not a joystick
- At the start of the video I map them to random keys to show you it says "KeyVolumeUp" etc. but reset the controls to normal after that
- These volume keys work fine in a new install of Raspbian, with no extra drivers or settings

Hey man - I took the time to put together a short video showing exactly how the buttons are recognised correctly as "volume up" and "volume down" but they have no effect on the volume. This is with 5.14. I hope this is useful in illustrating the problem.

Hey did you see the video? It's version 5.14 and the keys are genuine KeyVolumeUp / KeyVolumeDown, I show you in the video. And it still doesn't work.

that is not meaningful and purpose of the function. the keys you have occupied are to scroll faster in a long list or to assign the shoulder keys. Longer and quieter than function does not exist on the gamepad. The name to the right of the button comes from your gamepad - could also be called ENTER or Space .... that does not mean that the function Enter or Space is just L1 or L2, say the shoulder buttons.

You didn't watch the the whole video - I reset the controls after that, that was just to show you they were true volume keys.

In a clean install of Raspian I can adjust the volume with those same volume keys, with no extra drivers or configuration. But not in Bacotera.

Domarius hi, i've your video in my todo list. but unfortunatly, i have several things to do (in and outside batocera) ; so, it can take some days before i take time on it.

nadenislamarre No worries, just making sure you knew 🙂 I will work around it for now. I really like the quick boot time of Batocera over Retro Pi.

Update - I learned that only relying on the system volume is not a good idea as the background noise from the Pi internals is too unacceptable at anything lower than full system volume. You need to leave it at full system volume and and adjust the volume externally with something else. So I've bought a volume control cable off eBay for my speakers.
