I am in the same case, and was having some problems to make Recalbox running on X86-64, and when it was running, there was a horrible keyboard lag. Batocera is more advanced now, Recalbox becomes the fork.
I have on my X55 an SSD where windows10 was preinstalled, and I stayed it in place, and reserved 90GB on the same disk for the /share folders, and after copying bios, roms and some own files over, it is working fine and anyway in ES Sytem he find the free partitions.
