batocera.linux 5.20 correction for intel gpus

For intel gpu users:
It seems support is broken for some models in 5.20. If you get a blank/black screen, please try the build bellow. It is a custom BA 5.20 image with a newer kernel. Our updater is not smart and will keep bugging you about a new update. Just ignore it. If you, by accident, update to vanilla BA, just reinstall my build.

A definitive correction will come with batocera.linux 5.21.

Note for intel+nvidia dual gpu notebooks:
If you are also getting a blank screen, this image will get BA up and running in your system. Usage of the discrete nvidia gpu is not possible at the moment. If you have this setup and is familiar with list command line, please, let me know. I want to test if we can enable the nvidia gpu.

The version of 5.20 below has no issues with Intel GPUs:

5.20 2019/01/18 20:51-- It works fine

I have tested it across Intel HD graphics on a number of laptops and PCs.

(Version -- 5.20 2019/01/17 19:58 -- does have the problem)

Could you add the first version to the auto update feature in the start menu until version 5.21 is released?

I can test again on a new hard drive after you make the change

poke Usage of the discrete nvidia gpu is not possible at the moment. If you have this setup and is familiar with list command line, please, let me know. I want to test if we can enable the nvidia gpu.

I have an HP 15t J100 with Intel HD 4600 and discrete Nvidia GT740M. Vanilla 5.20 Works fine with Intel graphics, but I can test custom builds if you want to see if you can enable the Nvidia GPU.

I was looking this for ages!

I got a old Atom and 2 toshiba notebooks (core i3-2xxx) without screens to test. Thanks for this! The last stable version (5.20) works well, but after exit any emulator, it was falling to black "batocera.linux" screen, or just not booting and black screen (although i was able to fix this installing the .img with Etcher...RUFUS and others just stucking on black screen and clicking noises from the hard drives, all three of them, even when the health of the HDD's are all OK. Strange!)

I'll test it out.

First results:

Toshiba C845-SP4207kL: Working via VGA Output after successful config via broken screen, and removed after that. I get random black "batocera.linux" screen on first boot...really strange. Sometimes occurs with a game that previously works at first. Issue is:

boot
enter to ES.
Load a game
Exit the game
Black "batocera.linux" screen

After black screen, enter command line (via F3) and "startx", no more black screen (with the same game). Also, since i use ES in spanish, got some symbol errors. Back to english and no more errors. Anyway, great progress!

Update: after black screen and "startx", still exits randomly on some games.

Any ETA on 5.21 release? Hopefully it will get also have the latest release Kodi 18 that was recently released.

Hi, I'm experiencing some 5 secs "freezes" when the recalbox loads something on the menu, like the next song, or even navigating on the emulators and roms, sometimes in the games, like when it creates a new slot data, it's very annoying, here are my specs:

Lenovo C440
CPU: Intel pentium G2020
GPU: integrated Intel hd graphics
Ram: 8gb
Recalbox: USB 64Gb 3.0 kingston Dt50

I tried several times erasing the USB and installing the image again, tried a Lenovo c260 with Celeron j1800 and the same.issue, has anyone experience something like that?

I have an Intel GPU on a NUC8, and this has also seemingly fixed HDMI sound issues, too. Awesome, thanks so much!

I would fight with this system for awhile after each boot to get sound to work, but now it just starts for me.

GPU-wise I notice that Beetle-Saturn runs pretty flawlessly now, and in the past release, would have some graphical chugging.

I agree. Would be better to replace current 5.20 with this version here, as long as most users have problems with the current 5.20 and this version here runs better for the majority.
Even if 5.21 will come soon (although i suspect, that 5.21 will not come before end of march. But that is just a guess of mine, because in the past the update-cycle was about every 2 month).

Levellingup i understand it is frustrating, but a kernel change is significant and can break other system without proper testing. I will drop a line to @nadenislamarre and see what he thinks.

Kintao was playing super monkey ball 1 much better yesterday. I only rarely notice frame drops now, where as before, it was way more often. I'll investigate tonight to see if there are any games that don't stay at 60fps.

unfortunatly, i've the same answer as poke.
by experience, each version broke for some users while it is better for some others.
however, note that this is the result of limited tests for each versions ; only a view people are making tests during rc versions.and even if they do, it is a bit frustrating for them because it is no more time to solve minor issue that can have big impact, but just time to discover any big broken point.
the good point however is that batocera allows rollback to previous version without data loss.
i'm not ready for 5.21 ; i would like to release it in march, but i'm late on several points (and i'm taking most of my time on the odroid n2 these last days https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=179&t=33790 which is not a priority at all, but over priorities, i priorize my pleasure ;-)

It is a shame there isn't a clear step by step, how to guide on how to roll back to previous versions though.

Some of us aren't very technical but we do try to help with testing, bug reporting and game compatibility.
I know its not much but its the only way we can help

Please, test RC releases and report problems with the necessary logs. We did not catch the problem during testing and took me a couple of weeks to finally get my hands on a good support archive. I know not all users know how to do that. On the other hands, the community could write articles and how-to's. We would happily add them to the official documentation.

Testing release candidates is a good idea.
The problem is that you have to watch Discord and be in the right channel at the right time to get the information.
The information is available on the forum, but there is a topic with each new version, and you usually connect more to Discord.
What do you think of a mailing list?
Otherwise a Discord channel dedicated to this type of information would do the trick.

rptx i like the idea of an open issue system. Problem is our users usually open bugs for the same problem without looking into previous issues. This is the same behaviour we have in our forum. A couple of users have access to our current issue system. Although it is not used much.
