Boot strangeness with 5.21 X64

X64 5.22 does not seem to boot correctly.
I have tried to boot 5.22 from a USB stick on a machine that worked perfectly well with earlier (5.18) sticks - I then installed to internal HDD and now had to reinstall because of the size increase of the boot partition.
The only way I could get that done was by reverting the machine to Windows, as it refused to boot from the 5.22 stick directly. Strangely when I install Windows, then use the OS methode of UEFI boot (Hold Shift, click "Restart Machine", then after 30 seconds or so you will end up in menus that let you select a boot device for the next boot, regardless of BIOS!) I can boot the Batocera stick.
I am PRETTY sure (but not completely) that this was not the same behaviour in 5.18 or so. I was able to directly boot from the USB. Don't ask me what could cause this weird behaviour. Did something in the UEFI boot setup change between versions? It would explain why several people posted "X64 does not boot" questions the last days.

Kugelblitz your boot up options in the bios need to have usb as 1st boot. If it chages on you check your motherboard battery. Mine boots fine with my internal hard drive as 2nd boot and all my games on it. Have you tried legacy boot ? I cant remimber which one mine is set to. Also you can do a duel boot with linux os and windows but windows has to be on it first. All you have to do is go to boot opions on start up. This is how mine is set up.

Thank you for your friendly reminder, but I know the Boot options of my system pretty well. It is highly irregular that I can't boot directly from USB - it worked with earlier versions, I am pretty sure - but works when I use Windows as a stopgap solution. I will investigate further (will try an earlier version to confirm my hunch).
