MAME Samples

Where should I put MAME samples in order for them to work? Do I need them as ZIP files or uncompressed?

I tried putting them in bios/mame078plus/samples both as ZIPs and uncompressed, but Retroarch doesn’t seem to find them anyway

What you mean with samples ? Game roms ?
Just put your roms in ,zip form inside /share/roms/mame not inside the bios.
Now, for games with no .chd files, this will be everything. If you have games with .chd file,
you must create inside /share/roms/mame a folder with the exact name of the game,
as example if the game is area51mx.zip, the folder name will be [area51mx] and the file inside
this folder will be area51mx.chd.

There are a couple of old games where sound is not emulated so samples are used instead. In standard MAME installations they go into a seperate directory from the ROMs. And again, this is highly version dependent and creates further problems for Bato/Retroarch "supporting" several MAME versions in parallel.
