I am going to edit this just because I don't want people not to buy something that suits them due to odd comment. If you mean that turning it off by button while it is running can damage your SD than you are right.... But just don't be stupid and use the button once the device has actually switched off. This would be just as true for your solution or a random power cut. These days it can actually take awhile to damage SD card like that, but surely there are unlucky people that would have it happen on first go ;-) I like the cable because I can turn the power flow off and not see little lights on the device (not only PI) while it is not on or used....
