How to Install Batocera

Apologies if this is a noob question, I've tried Googling but can't seem to find an answer. It's happened a few times now with different cards so I'm getting a little exasperated.

I've followed the straightforward download instructions provided on the website but after flashing the .img file onto a SD card, the SD card size has shrunk massively, eg. 128GB to 1.8GB. It is still showing in disconfig and in disc management but I am unable to access that space any other way.

It's probably something simple but does anyone any ideas?

After you flashed the .img onto the SD-Card, you have to put this SD-Card into your device (Raspberry Pi? Or which Architecture do you use?) and let it boot until Batocera has loaded up and you see the Emulation Station Menu.
You can then access the Data-Partition (where all your roms, saves and metadata are stored) via Network.
When you plug this SD-Card into a windows-PC via USB-Adapter/Card Reader, you can not see/access this Data-Partition because it is in Ext4 file format/system. And Windows is not able to read it (only Linux).

Yes using Raspberry Pi. Okay got you, but wouldn't doing them over a wireless network make it a really slow way of transfering them?

use wired network... way faster and reliable

Well couldn't even get it connected to the network, it sees it but won't connect???

It's in a room above, would need to run a 20 / 30 m cable.

Only for the time you need to transfer the roms, you could place it more near to the router
