Mame 2010 Rpi4

Unsure whether to put this in Emulators or Rpi4, seem to get be more replies here.

So I have played around with a few frontends (basically Lakka and Batocera) for the Rpi4 over the last month or so and much prefer Batocera so have decided on that for now. I downloaded a mame 2003 romset and 90% of the games I’ve gone through are working as they should. However as is typical with these things quite a few of that 10% are games I used to play as a kid and would quite like to play again. I have tried multiple versions of the roms (even ones that aren’t in the romset) when available, sometimes they work sometimes they don’t. The thing is all bar a few will work on Lakka, either through the 2010 emulator or even the 2003 emulator.

I’m still pretty much a noob so I’m wondering why there is this difference between the 2003 emulators and why there is no 2010 support (any I can find) on Batocera. Is the 2010 emulator something can be downloaded and put in a file, something that is being worked on, or something no one is that bothered about? I’ve tried Google but I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to be looking for. It looks like RetroPie for Rpi4 has both as well although I can’t say for sure yet.

If anyone is interested an example of the games: World Rally, World Rally 2. There are others but can’t think off the top of my head.

Thanks, yes I saw that, it’s what prompted me to post this. I was considering posting on that thread. But what I was wondering is if it was possible to have two folders / cores in Batocera one with 2003 and one with 2010 like it is in Lakka?

@thewrongtrousers never download roms file by file, mame doesn"t work that way., a given romset is guaranteed to work (mi us non working roms) with the mame emulator of the same version number and not any other

So you need an mame2003/0.78 romset and a mame2010/0.139 romset, then copy only one of them in your mame folder
Then you must choose the emulator to be used for this system, when on the general systems view ith all consoles/system, press start it should be in one of the submenu (Games maybe) under something like ‘Advanced System configuration’ or something. Just choose the emulator corresponding to your set

thewrongtrousers You could add your own cores as you could modify and add folders. However it is more trouble than just getting compatible set. That way you have something that works over updates rather than getting modification in everytime Batocera updates. This would take you awhile there are topics on forum that will tell you how to do that. In my opinion it is simply not worth the time and effort. Also as voljega said you can always change the core in settings. His tool (that I have not tried yet) also seems a good option to sort your roms.

Wow thanks for that, will be a lot easier than me going through all the roms to see are working or not. I’m currently using the 2003 emulator with the 0.78 romset. But will try the 2010 set instead. Is there no way to have a folder with one core in each like Lakka does?

I only tried other roms from other sets just to see, when the ones in 0.78 failed to work. From what you’ve said they shouldn’t have worked but surprisingly I’ve had a little success with individual roms from other sets (or maybe they were just ones not included in the 0.78 set I downloaded) I’ll go back through and see if I can work out which ones they were.

Ah right okay thanks, I might give a it a go to see if I can do it, its not like I don’t have time at the moment. If it starts taking to long I just go to changing the core but would prefer not to as it just seems untidy😂

@thewrongtrousers It CAN work as all roms not change each time a new mame version is released, some of them don’t even change anymore and have been the same since a long time ago.
But the only way to be sure to have roms in the best state for each meme version is to have the correct romset

You can perfectly have two subfolders in mame roms folders in batocera with the two sets however for now there is no simple solution to make one the folder use the correct version of the emulators except changing emulator for one game on a game by game basis

However it’s doable if you keep only a small number of games in one of the two folders ? like if you want only a few in mame2010 which don’t work in mame2003 ?
Also if a game uses a mame bios, it must also be placed in the same folder (and bioses are also versionned like roms)

Btw my tool (link in first sheet posted above) can help you doing that with certain conditions of parameters

thewrongtrousers You can, but it will take LONG especially if you are not familiar with it and you might/will fail few times. Just either do as voljega said or simply keep the 078 set and just filter what works.

Thanks, yes it would probably only be a few of the games, most of the ones I’m wanting to play there is a working rom in 2003. I’ll have a look and see if I can work out how to create additional folders.

I did initially try to use the FBN core with the correct romset but it didn’t really work, there was a list of games in it but none would highlight as I scrolled through them (they were just sort of rainbow coloured and listed in the middle of the screen unlike the other cores) so choosing a game was completely random - any ideas?

OK well if you want to use my tool, this Sorting Parameters will do what you want (provided you have the two sets mame2003 and mame2010) : keep all working mame2003 roms and take the other working ones in mame2010

mame2003+ > mame2010 > mame2003

thewrongtrousers The display showed like that cause the game list provided was probably not optimized for Batocera and was not scraped with images/description.

No 2003+ uses a specific romset, which you can find pretty easily on google typeing mame2003 plus romset or mame2003plus romset
