Issues with PSX emulation

Dear Batocera Team,

first of all: Brilliant work on this image and project. Compared to RecalBox and RetroPie builds it’s simply superior. Thanks for this.

Now to my problem: I have installed everything so far and all of the platforms work well except PSX. From 20 roms on my SD card, only 2 are working. All the others either end up in a black screen (I can back to the menu with the hotkey though) or simply dropping back to the menu.

I have taken a look at all the roms and everything seems to be set up fine. There are .cue files with connected (I checked the .cue if the link is right) .bin files, I have all the needed BIOS files, all of the games are copied and sorted properly to the SD card (checked the MD5 checksum through TeraCopy) and on my local pc they work fine. But in Batocera/Retroarch they simply don’t work.

What could be the issue?

Which architecture are you using? (Raspberry Pi, PC, ….)
Did you check in Game Settings, Missing Bios, if your PSX bios files are recognzied correctly?
When you are using an architecture, where libretro/mednafen_psx core is availalble (see here for the list: ttps://batocera.org/compatibility), did you also try with this core?
Are those games, that do not work have multiple .bin files or only one (one .bin and one corresponding .cue-file)?
Could you name a few examples of games, that do not work?

Thanks for the quick reply. Regarding your questions:

Architecture is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
All the right BIOS files are included for PSX (got it from here)
For the emulation core I used to have Auto set, but I tried libretro/mednafen_psx without any success
I checked if the .cue content is referring to the right .bin file and it’s all fine for the games in question.

So I tried the following games:

Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (USA) [SLUS-00220] (consisting of 1 .cue and 1 .bin)
Works on PC with RetroArch (pcsxrearmed_libreretro), crashes during intro video on Pi4 with RetroArch (pcsxrearmed and medafen)
Croc - Legend of the Gobbos (USA) (consisting of 1 .cue and 1 .bin)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), instantly returns to EmulationStation with pcsxrearmed, freezes after the Playstation Logo with medafen
Resident Evil - Director’s Cut (Dual Shock Version) (USA) (consisting of 1 .cue and 2 .bins)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), instantly returns to EmulationStation after launching with medafen and psxrearmed
WipEout (USA) (consisting of 1 .cue and 9 .bins)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), instantly returns to EmulationStation after launching with medafen and psxrearmed
Tunnel B1 (Europe) (consisting of 1 .cue and 1 .img)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), works with Pi4 on both medafen and psxrearmed
Bishi Bashi Special (E) [SLES-02537] (consisting of 1 .cue and 1 .bin)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), works with Pi4 on both medafen and psxrearmed
Crash Bash (USA) (consisting of 1 .cue and 1 .bin)
Works on PC with RetroArch (as above), instantly returns to EmulationStation after launching with psxrearmed, enters a psx cd menue when launching it with medafen.

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on here. All the roms perfectly work on my PC system setup, but only Tunnel B1 and Bishi Bashi works on my Pi4 setup, all the others don’t even start. I have no problems with other emulators and systems by the way. So any idea what I am doing wrong?

for those games with multiple .bin files you should convert them into one single .bin file first (just google multiple bin psx and you will find several tutorials on youtube, how to do that).
for the other games, i can not tell, what is wrong.
unfortunately i do not have a pi4 so i can not try to reproduce your issue with those games.
but i could try to see, if those games work with my pi3b+ or pc with batocera.

you could also try to get those games from another source? maybe with another file-extension/format like .pbp and see, if those games then work for you? just google “cdromance” and you will find a source for some games with .pbp file extension (“PSX on PSP eBoots”)

So I checked the md5sum of those bios files and only scph101.bin, scph5500.bin, scph7001.bin have the correct md5 value. Batocera is very picky with the bios it accepts. More info here: https://wiki.batocera.org/what_are_bios_and_how_to_add_them?s[]=bios

My advice is to google “batocera bios” to find the exact ones you need. The problem with your bios files is also that they are named “PSX - SCPHXXXX.BIN” when they have to be exactly like it’s it shown in the wiki. I would try the get the correct ones, rename the one you have (with correct md5), make sure they are in the correct folder (NOT in a subfolder) and try again. Batocera is a bit more fiddly to get up and running but once it’s running it’s great.

Thanks a lot to both of you, I just downloaded the BIOS pack that I got through searching for the term “batocera bios” and updated the complete folder.

I also started downloading new roms from “romance” (very good tip, it’s a great source for material) and will try playing around with these. I want to avoid using new files in general because I have a large collection of roms with .cue’s and multiple .bin’s and I am somewhat a person who doesn’t like redundancies 😀

Anyway, I will try that and let you know if it worked, just give me 1-2 days until I have time to look through this. Thanks alot to both of you for the support!

Just wanted to let you know that it is working :) I think the problem was most propably the BIOS files that made problems. After updating these and getting some roms from “cdromance”, everything’s working fine. Thanks kindly for your support and help!
