Today's update broke my system

Installed the latest update, after the required reboot, black screen. Waited for a while then rebooted again. This time it loaded, but all the rooms were gone and the system was restored to the default state. Lots of wotk wasted.

Can’t trust a system this unstable.

DaSpider Update done via options or console would not remove roms. The roms are partitioned off. Either you did manual update and messed a command and/or did full wipe, or you interupted update process. But even with the interupt your roms would still be there(assuming nothing else happened).

DaSpider That makes no sense. The bottom line is you seem to be the only person reporting the problem that you are not describing in details, not providing logs or in dept explaination. Noone can help you with that approach.

don’t know what happened on your side. usually a system update does not affect any of the roms.
how did you update?
and from which version to which one exactly?
and what hardware do you use? (RPi, PC?)

did the system reboot itself or did you reboot manually? my guess is, that the update process has been interrupted by this rebooting and that has caused your issue.

because if it would be a general issue with batocera, then a lot more people would have reported that.

In system update from 5.25 to 5.26 on a MacBook Air booting from a 32GB thumb stick, not even half full.
I used the menu option “check for updates”
The system updated itself and then rebooted on its own.
Clean slate and despair followed. Couldn’t restore all the game videos yet, the option is just gone on the new version.
Scrapping first time took forever, finally when the system and themes were just perfect, gone. No reason.
Waste of time.
Next time I update, will be to a different distro for sure.

DaSpider Did it remove everything or you are using USB and HDD? The reinstall specified your USB as storage and you did not change settings to specify HDD?

Usually the system does not reboot on its own. It tells you to do a reboot to finish the update process and then you manually reboot by going to exit and choose restart in the menue.
Maybe your system crashed for some reason and that was causing your issue then.
I would check your drive (32gb thumb stick) for errors and/or try with another fresh formatted drive/thumb stick.

But you can also make it easy for yourself and no longer examine the whole thing properly and simply say Batocera was to blame.

As others have stated the roms are partitioned off from the main boot volume so they should still be there. For others in the same boat and haven’t already started over from scratch you might want to try manually updating the system image directly on the boot partition.

It reset all partitions. No evidence the update was unsuccessful. It looked exactly like when I first installed. Disabled automatic updates from now on. I recommend only manual updates and backup your share partition. Just saying.

DaSpider If indeed that is what happened you are the only person I have seen here reporting it. There is no need recommending manual updates to people using Batocera. I have used it on PI2 and x64 with often enough part swaps, with both autmatic and manual updates at some point in my usage time and never had this happen.

Even if we take your explaination as given and trust you have perfectly working hardware and have not done anything wrong it is hard to belive that auto update wiped a separate game partition. Not impossible - just have to have things go wrong in ways that are hard to achieve following the process. There is actually more chances of messing things up using the manual process as the automatic was designed to not have human interference and tested over and over.

DaSpider That is not how it works. This is why for example they test vaccsines on multiple people rather than one…. Would you take it if one patient tested would be cured or would you rather see results in a group of few hundred, or thousand before doing so. People declare things good/safe based on multiple tries/trials/feedbacks.

Once there is more feedback or more cases I am sure someone will look into it. But seeing how you are the only one with problem you are not even describing in detail it is hard to take it for given.
