Installation - is it actually installing

So it runs fine off of USB, I’ve gone through the process of installing it to a local SSD.

It’s been on ‘Writing the disc SDA, please wait.’ For around 2 hours. I’m not in a rush, I actually left it sitting while I did other things, but what is it actually doing? Why is it taking that long? That’s insane. I have nothing showing me what could be wrong so I can’t troubleshoot. The drive was formatted entirely. I don’t mind formatting it again. I just wish I had some way of identifying the issue. I’ll let it go for a while longer and then just force everything to shut down and see what happens.

Which version of Batocera? 29?
What is the size of the SSD?
Do you have a SATA to USB adapter or a 2.5 "external hard drive enclosure with which you could connect the SSD to another PC in order to write the image directly to the SSD instead of going through a USB stick?
You could also directly plug the SSD into another PC via SATA and write the image with etcher on it.
Do you have another drive (SSD or standard HDD) which you could test? Just to rule out, that the cause is not the SSD you are using.

joinski Hi john, thanks for replying. However after about 5 days of going over the most basic functions of batocera I’ve determined it’s not user friendly and have decided not to use it.

I can see a lot of potential and I hope it grows and improves but I can only describe it as ‘anti - user experience’ at this point.

which alternative is more user friendly in your eyes?
