Boot Hang Issue on New Intel/NVIDIA Rig

Hey friends!

So I’ve scoured the forums and can’t seem to address my issue. Before I just give up, I figured I’d see if anyone had any ideas. I just built a new rig with the following essential specs for troubleshooting:

Intel i7-12000KF / NVIDIA 3080 / ASUS STRIX B660 MOBO (UEFI)

When I attempt to boot Batocera from USB (or even the internal drive that I imaged before install), Batocera will initially appear to boot (I see the static Batocera splash image momentarily), but then the screen goes black and remains black. When attempting to boot from USB, I notice some disk activity after going black, but then nothing. I’ve tried waiting several minutes, no discernible progress after the initial, momentary disk activity.

I’ve gone into my BIOS and tried playing with all the usual settings, turning off Secure Boot and Fast Boot, enabling Legacy Boot, but all ends up the same way. For the moment, I have no other OSes installed. Though I did image Pop OS! to a USB drive and was able to boot to the desktop as a live image, no problems. Did the same with Manjaro, was able to successfully install to the internal drive and boot from there without any issues either.

Perhaps (hopefully) I’m just overlooking something stupidly simple, anyone have any suggestions?

Possibly, you just need to enable the nvidia drivers. Plug the drive into an already running operating system and use Notepad++ or nano to remove the comment in front of nvidia-driver in batocera-boot.conf.

Thank you, Atari, I did indeed think of that, but to no avail. I’ve been able to continue to tinker, and I was finally able to get Batocera to boot from a USB thumb drive. It was uncharacteristically slow (I run it all the time on other, less powerful laptops and less performant drives than the USB 3 drive I was trying out), but still cannot get an installation from an internal SSD to boot. The same experimental flash drive boots flashlessly another, older PC (with NVIDIA graphics), further stumping me. Not the end of the world, of course, I might just tinker around further and report back if I can come up with anything. Just incredibly puzzling and oddly inexplicable!

Do note that there are various warnings on the installation page explaining why you should not install Batocera onto an “internal” SATA-connected drive.

Thank you, Atari, I had not noticed that prior! I’m not upset about it, of course, just seems odd to me that I was able to install other flavors of Linux and enjoy an internal installation on my Mac Pro (on its own drive, not my main MacOS drive), but on this machine it didn’t work out. Even the USB flash drive experience was uncharacteristically slow on this new rig, again another issue I have yet to run into on my other machines.

I’m going to keep at it, I still LOVE LOVE LOVE Batocera, it’s a fantastic way to play! Thanks again for all the time and attention!
