Dell Optiplex No HDMI Audio

Hi, noob here. I’ve searched a lot for fixes for no audio coming through HDMI but can’t solve my issue.

I have a mini pc Dell Optiplex 7040 micro with I believe an i5-6500 running Batocera v34. There’s no GPU or anything. It has an internal speaker which I can get sound through but I can’t get it to come through HDMI. I’ve tried changing both the Audio Output and Audio Profile is Batocera system settings with no luck. The only Audio Profile that will work for me is “HDAINTEL PCH PRO AUDIO” – anything that mentions HDMI won’t work. I’ve gone through all the settings in KODI with no luck. I’ve brought up ALSA and all the settings looked fine. I’ve gone into the Dell BIOS and disabled the internal speaker which does nothing for me other than turn off the internal speaker so I get no sound at all.

I’m at a total loss. I’m not very tech-y but if anybody has suggestions on how to get my sound to be routed through my HDMI instead of the internal pc speaker that they could walk me through, I’m all ears.

If Kodi isn’t allowing for any audio output then your issue is either hardware related (as in, it’s impossible to send the audio through) or it’s not supported by the Linux kernel (which case is just a matter of waiting for it to be added).

Might help. I don’t have that machine.

Hard turn off computer, turn on with the display already on.
After boot, see if any the settings have HDMI audio.
if not, ssh in and type: batocera-audio list
See if any of those mention HDMI: eg: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_03.0.hdmi-stereo-extra1
Look for “audio.device=” in your batocera.conf and set equal to what you found.
Reboot and see if works, or if an HDMI audio setting is now available.

I have been through the audio issues section on the wiki with no luck.

The thing is, I see HDMI options in my settings, but they aren’t working. When I disable the internal speaker in the BIOS settings I then get the option in Batocera of audio output = “alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.hmdi-surround” and audio profile = “output:hdmi-surround@alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3” but I still get no sound.

And now for some reason when I try to open KODI, everything freezes and I have to manually turn off the computer :(

ripsky Did you ever figure this out? I’m running into the same issue with my optiplex.

I just went through something similar with an Optiplex 3050 on Batocera V36 (new SOF system). Try this:

Shutdown and connect a keyboard
Boot up pressing F2 to get into BIOS
Find the audio configuration items in BIOS
Leave the enable audio system checked
UNCHECK the internal speaker and microphone
Apply the settings
Reboot

Having the internal speaker and microphone enabled on my system prevented Batocera from seeing the HDMI audio path, it only saw the internal speaker. Disabling the speaker and mic and immediately had HDMI audio available on next reboot.

Check the alsamixer settings: Open a terminal window and type “alsamixer” to open the alsamixer settings. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the HDMI device (which may be labeled something like “HDMI 0” or “HDMI 1”), and make sure that the volume is turned up and that the device is not muted (if it has an “MM” instead of a volume level, press the “M” key to toggle mute on/off).

Here is a screenshot of the alsamixer running inside the terminal. Notice that I have an SSH session with the Batocera Linux machine. In the image I clicked on F6 using the mouse, so even though the interface is very sparse looking, you can use the mouse to to things. Hope this helps.
