I tried with the code you gave than with the one i was already trying (the difference between them are just a hyphen "-"). Then i tried my code again and the error comes once more. See what it says on WinSCP.

@nadenislamarre i had also tried to erase the overlay file on boot/boot and type the saveoverlay but the error remains... see the message i receave trying with and without hyphen.

Just also tried to resize the overlay to 100mb but received the same error message.

you're connecting with winscp or a such tool that doesn't connect correctly.
i'll add a hack to avoid this kind of problem in the future while you're not the only one.

before running,
write:
$ PATH=$PATH:/sbin
$ /recalbox/scripts/recalbox-save-overlay.sh 100

On a working, unmodified v5.11 system on RPi3, if I run recalbox-save-overlay.sh it completes without error, but on restart, the system will no longer launch emulation station. I have tried with and without appending sbin onto the path. This script renders the system unusable.

Also, recalbox-saveoverlay.sh is not present in v5.11.

in case of problem, you can remove the modified files : on the sd card/usb remove the file boot/overlay from any computer.

After running the script on a system WITHOUT any modifications, the system no longer works.

This script breaks an UNMODIFIED system.

It does not work on a modified system either.

it doesn't work in case you've strictly no modification, yes.
but on the other cases, i use it everyday with success.
you've probably on a special case ;-( anyway, this is for development purpose, but it would be better to fix it.
you can remove in grub.conf quiet loglevel to show the error message.

Nick, this is NOT true on a RPi3 that uses external storage.

I took the unmodified (no /boot/boot/overlay file) system, made the one line, lirc change to kodilauncher.sh from earlier today, ran recalbox-save-overlay.sh. The system now boots, but does not start emulationstation. The system displays the batocera splash screen, it dims and then instead of the emulationstation carousel, it displays the batocera splash screen with the version/timestamp text. The system is up - I can ssh into it, but emulationstation does not start.

If I unplug my external usb hard drive, the system now starts and the kodilauncher.sh fix is there.

The recalbox-save-overlay.sh script does not work with external storage. Is there a workaround?

start es manually to see :
/etc/init.d/S31emulationstation start to see why.
it's strange while there should have no link with external storage.

I installed batocera v5.11 on top of recalbox 4.0.0. The SD card was formatted, but the hard drive was not.

The problem may be recalbox files leftover on the HD.

Progress! After I rebuild the overlay, the mount point for /sev/sda1 is wrong. Emulationstation does not start because /dev/sda1 is mounted @ /media/Recalbox-Media_1/.

if I manually mount /dev/sda1 @ media/Recalbox-Media and then start S31Emulationstation, the system is fine.

As a workaround, I tried switching back to internal storage, making the changes, saving the overlay, restarting the system and then switching back to external storage. The external drive is now mounted @ /media/Recalbox-Media_2 !!! It gets worse - I now have 2 extra mount points.

Using the temporary saved overlay creates a new mount point for the share device.

The automounting script creates a new mountpoint if Recalbox-Media exists. The mountpoints have to be deleted before the new overlay is created.

Here is the complete workaround to use recalbox-save-overlay.sh with external storage:

1) Switch back to internal storage.
2) make / writable, modify files.
3) remove mountpoints from /media
a) umount /media/Recalbox-Media
b) rmdir Recalbox-Media
4) Run recalbox-save-overlay.sh
5) reboot and then switch to external media. This will create the mountpoint again.

This way, the mountpoints do not get propagated when cascading generations of system image. If usbmount did not create mountpoints this would not be necessary. Possibly, the mountpoints could be static. Does the system work with multiple external devices simultaneously? Does anyone do this?

i've not understand exactly how to reproduce, can you tell me more ?
note that dynamic mount points it new to batocera 5.11 ; so, i've possibly added a problem here.

To re-create:
build a clean 5.11 system, switch storage to a usb mechanical, spinning hard drive , run recalbox_save_overlay.sh.
Emulationstation does not start.

Again, my hard drive still had recalbox4.0.0 on it, so it was not clean.
