Batocera on the AYN Odin

Ive read some posts on the Odin possibly being able to run Batocera (or any Linux OS) despite its snapdragon chipset.

Something about its mainline kernel support or something? Dunno.Im no techie.

And the Batocera wiki choose a handheld section also shows a pic of the Base/Pro as not supported…..yet.

And also the downloads respository has beta and boot version for the Odin but latest was back in July 11.

Seems development has stalled then?

Is this a functioning beta image for the Odin Base/Pro? I cant test as I havent got an Odin so was wondering.

Can anyone who tested it post results?

Can a dev give a definitive answer on Batocera and the Odin Base/Pro?

Im talking the Base and Pro,.apparently not on the Lite due to its chipset.

Batocera on the Odin is still under development.

Whether or not a new beta image has been compiled has absolutely no indication on how active its development is, as there is no regular schedule for beta image creation. For instance, the RPi 1 beta hasn’t been updated for years, yet it’s still receiving device-specific updates every month or so.

With that said, Odin is definitely still being looked at, if you refer to the commits page on the Github. But of course, there are major issues with getting it in a functional state, and there’s no timeframe as for when such hurdles will be overcome.

So ‘still under development’ and ‘still being looked at’ is a positive sign but doesnt necessarily mean an eventual stable release does it?

Hence the major issues bit.

But those images I linked are infact functional for the Odin?

Wonder if anyone here has tested? Havent seen any posts or vids about them.You’d think someone would have.

Outside of there being an active “blocker” (which there hasn’t been yet, at least to my knowledge) the stable Odin build will be completed and released one day.

The betas are generated and released for users who wish to test the hardware. When in the early phases, sometimes older kernels/crude patches are used to get a device be bootable (better than nothing at all), but obviously these are not long-term solutions so they will eventually be phased out. It’s entirely possible that these patches are not functional/have really bad issues (possibly data corruption). For instance, the first Steam deck build didn’t actually boot on the device, but it was still required to know what could be compiled or not.

I see there’s an even later beta from Feb 27, as well as a release candidate from the same day. I’m very interested in trying it on my Odin Pro. Is it possible to dual-boot with the SD card? Or do I need to wipe the stock OS? I suppose dual-booting Windows 11 is possible so dual-booting this should be too, eh.

edit: yeah, looks like you’ve got to wipe the device and split the internal storage in half. My ROMs are in the SD card so it won’t be hard to set up a second time on Android and also dual-boot with Batocera.

OK, struggling a bit here. I used Project Valhalla to repartition my 256 GB Odin Pro (M2 version), and it successfully boots back into Android, but I’m not sure what to do next. The Linux guide has an image from July 2022 that includes a couple Android platform tools to flash it. The two files for Batocera on the Odin have a whole lot more to them. It’s not just a matter of changing the filenames in the Project Valhalla flash script.

Am I supposed to flash it from Recovery mode on the Odin, via SD card or ADB? The fact there’s no documentation kind of stops me in my tracks.

Probably should have thought through this before I wiped the Odin. LOL
