Black screen when connecting a controller

I’ve tried 3 different controllers, generic USB ones and PS4 ones wired and via bluetooth, and every time I connect a controller, the screen goes black.

The controllers are fine, I’ve tested them in other machines (laptops and RPI, both batocera and recalbox).

I’ve tried this on versions 34 and 35 and they are both the same. The laptop is a Gigabyte AERO 15 with a Rtx 3060.

Any ideas about what’s going on? or how to debug this? Thanks in advance.

Probably a hardware issue, with the USB hub being overloaded.

Atari 1) it’s not an external hub, it’s connected to the laptop’s USB 2) it also happens when connecting a controller via bluetooth and 3) any other USB device works fine on that laptop…. any other ideas? or where to look for debug logs, etc?

yunketer I didn’t say it was explicitly an external hub. A hub is simply the cluster of USB ports, typically these are soldered directly onto the motherboard itself and configured in such a way that it is transparent to the user. On a laptop, I would believe that they’d go for cheaper materials/ones that require less power.

If you want logs, there are always ones available in the system/logs directory. You could also look at EmulationStation’s logs in configs/emulationstation, though if the matter is simply “hardware is causing ES to crash” then it wouldn’t have printed anything to the logs.
