Black screen after loading OS

I hope somebody can help me with this.

I just received my new motherboard, CPU and memory hardware and after putting it together I was excited to put Batocera on it. I’m on a MSI B550 gaming GEN3, AMD 5800X CPU, 32GB RAM and an Nvidia GTX 1060 card.

I flashed the latest stable release of Batocera on a 32gb stick, the idea was to install it from here on a 2tb NVMe ssd.
After powering up my PC the Batocera bootloader shows up, then the Batocera loading screen, And then nothing, a black screen.
I let it run for half an hour, still nothing, had some dinner, nothing…
Then flashed the stick with the newest beta 20230101, same thing, black screen.
I put the bootstick in my 10 year old laptop, boots perfect, runs fine.

Tried playing with the bootsetting config file on the stick for driver selection, same thing, black screen.
Installed Windows 11 on it to test my hardware, everything is fine.

Is there anybody who has the same issue and was able to fix this? For me it looks like a driver issue or something.

Possibly the hardware is just too new? Maybe wait for the next version, where the Linux kernel will be bumped again.

Could be, but I guess it’s videocard related and I still use my nvidia gtx1060 that works fine on the usual Linux distro’s. These drivers should be in any recent kernel by now. I tried ssh via putty, could not fix it. Stays black. Tried everything I could find on this forum, stays black. Tried everything I could find via Google and on reddit, still a black screen.

At this point I installed Retrobat in Windows, works great. Batocera seemed great due to not using Windows, but wel… Maybe I try to get batocera working this weekend and otherwise will try it again in a few months or so.

I was more thinking about the “AMD 5800X CPU”, which is new (forgive me if I’m wrong about this, I haven’t been looking in the market for a new CPU recently). The GPU is obviously old enough to be supported.

A double-edged sword, Windows is great because it is Windows, and every manufacturer wants to make drivers which work correctly for Windows and not Linux (Batocera).

If you want to elaborate on what you did here ^, then we could help. But you may also be right in that just waiting for a new release of Batocera might just fix the problem by itself.

Hi Atari,

Well, it seems to have solved itself by replacing the videocard. I just received my new AMD RX 6600, did a fresh install of Batocera and everything works fine now.
Just tested a C64 game, runs at full speed :P Also did a Wii game, with everything on maximum, 4k upscale with 8x SSAA and so on, runs full speed 60Mhz.
Also did this with a PS3 game, same story, runs great.

I have one question though. previous I was running Windows with just Dolphin and RPCS3 and when I needed to do something while running a game I just went to the RPCS3 menu and modified it. For example, With the game Skylanders in RPCS3 it is possible to choose game character via the RPCS3 ‘Portal of power’ menu. Is it possible to acces this in Batocera while running the game? Otherwise it would be unplayable.

dickydick666 In game settings > advanced per system options > ps3, set “GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE” to “ON”. Then it functions just like standalone on Windows does, just exit full screen and you can see the RPCS3 menu. You can also Alt + Tab in case it’s being drawn in the background.
