another post on issue with roms hosted on (synology) NAS

Hi all,

Like many others I am struggling on getting Batocera to work with roms hosted on a NAS (mine is a Synology DS1821). The weirdest thing is that I got it to work once, following this great step by step guide , then i experimented some more, broke the thing, and never got it to work again, even after fresh batocera (now v36) reinstall. I am also well aware of the instructions on the wiki, and i have also checked and followed various steps found on this forum in other posts, but still no luck.

Some background: I discovered batocera recently, until then i have a HTPC with LibreElec; and I’d like now to set-up batocera on this machine instead and i’ll be using Kodi for my movies. Instead of investigating in a new hard drive for my roms, and because I have another HTPC in the house, i would like to have the SAVES and ROMS on the NAS.

As far as I remember, this is how i manage the thing to work initially:

install was batocera v35, i used filezilla to download the batocera-boot.conf file to my pc, did the edits with Notepad++, upload back to batocera boot folder, reboot and bam, the roms NAS folder got all start-up roms installed (i used the NFS share then)
then on to experimentations, started the whole process again but that time i used the SHARE options to copy all folders. until i realize that there were some architecture specific folders, so to keep things simple i decided to remove the everything and repeat the step from previous step. Big mistake: from that point, i can’t get it to work again.
now i am on v36 fresh installs, i can of course access my shares through Kodi, either NFS or SMB, everything is working fine from Kodi. But when i relaunch batocera after the batocera-boot.conf has been updated, batocera does not populate the “roms” folder on the NAS. I have tried to make all type of edits in the batocera-boot.conf (and by the way I am not using a wifi connection), but i have exhausted all my options now.

I should add that I have tried to edit the boot file in batocera also with xterm, but it didn’t help

So, to the forum now: what rookie mistake do i make? thanks

Directory “/boot” (which contains “batocera-boot.conf”) is mounted as READ ONLY when you boot Batocera. You have to remount it as RW (using SSH) first. Or you can edit your memory card (or USBSTICK) on a Windows PC.

Yes i know, this is the first thing i do before any changes. The steps I have been following:

Scenario 1 (using FTP):

Start batocera
Launch ftp on pc and download boot file
Edit boot file on pc with Notepad++
Run command mount -o remount,rw /boot on batocera
Transfer edited boot file from pc back to batocera
Restart batocera
Check for nas folder: no roms

Scenario 2: edit boot file directly in batocera

Start batocera
Run command above
Edit boot file and save
Reboot batocera
Same issue

Continuing the discussions with myself 😀

So i started again on a fresh set-up (on another hard drive, if that matters, i don’t think…) and i tried alternatively on v35 and v36. And tried a couple of time just to confirm: NAS storage works perfectly when i set it up on v35, but fail every time i set-it up on v36.

The next question i’ll try to answer in the coming hours or days: what will happen if i set-it up on v35, and then upgrade to v36. will do the test and report back here if this interests anyone

ok, continuing the thread. so here i stand: under v35 i have no problem to use a network share and set-up Bios, Roms, Cheats and Saves on Nas. Then I upgrade to V36 and at reboot i get a black screen with the line “Booting Batocera.linux…”

Not sure how to solve this. I’ll roll back to v35 for now.

If a good soul reads this and knows what happens and can propose a solution: most welcomed ;-)
